Helllooooo Blog World,
Recently I read a story about a teenage girl in Indiana who has sung the national anthem at several sporting events for her school, she has sung this song in a 'non' traditional manner. Weeellll, she was asked to sing the national anthem in Martinsville, In (a predominantly white community). Weeellll, there were some complaints due to the tune being 'unrecognizable'. Not that the girl DID NOT do a good job, but the TUNE was 'unrecognizable'????? REALLY????!!!!!
Is the National Anthem trademarked? Is it ALWAYS supposed to be sung in a 'traditional' manner??? What about freedom of speech??? Do we, as citizens, have a right to sing this song utilizing our OWN interpretation????
After the complaints from the Martinsville, In school, the (teenage girl's) school district told her that she could no longer perform the national anthem. The teenager's family has written a letter to the school district, requesting an apology. The family stated...
"The national anthem is a historical symbol for our country for independence. The irony is that Shai is being denied her right of artistic expression as a result of her natural voice and cultural heritage,"
Remember when Roseanne Barr-Arnold sang the national anthem back in 1990 before a baseball game in San Diego??? Marvin Gaye even performed a 'non' traditional version of the song in 1983 before the NBA All-Star Game (BEST sung rendition EVER in my opinion)!!!!! Jose Feliciano and Jimi Hendrix (BEST non sung 'non' traditional rendition) have performed a 'non' traditional version of this song as well. I don't believe they were barred from ever performing again, however, they were criticized and/or ridiculed for their interpretations.
In this 'land of the free and home of the brave' are we NOT allowed to sing OUR national anthem as we choose to interpret it????
Holla Back!!!!!
